AED BBQ Meet n' Greet

The first meeting for Fall 2016 was a pure success! Students had a great time either meeting new people or catching up with some old friends, while enjoying some free food. Feel free to check out some of the pictures that were taken during this years BBQ.

Orientation Tables 2016

AED, alongside many other organizations, joined together and helped show us all of the different possibilities that are available for us. It was a great time getting to know what they had to offer and how we can better help serve our community. It was a pleasure getting to know them and also how we can better help you as students grow :).

Physicals 101 Meeting

AED members learned the proper techniques on how to take some vitals. There were several stations, taught by current UT medical students,OU medical students, that involved blood pressure, pulse, respiration, and heart murmurs and something new this year OMM taught by the OU students. Check out the pictures of the AED members taking these important vitals.

Interdisciplinary Health Professional Panel

This year we spiced things up a bit with our panel. Something new that we have been enforcing this year is more Pre-dental, Pre-Vet, Pre-Pharmacy, Pre-PA, Pre-PT and Pre-Med. We want to make sure that all of our members of AED get the attention that they deserve. This panel was above our expectations and gave us amazing insight on what they do for their everyday positions.

OU-HCOM's Jill Harman

Jill Harman, Director of Admissions at Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, visited us and presented a wonderful presentation. She informed AED members about the osteopathic principles and what OU-HCOM has to offer! To make yourself known to medical school admission staff, we suggest you come to meetings like this or visit the campus!

Medical Ethics

Students were split between two group to participate in Medical Ethics Game. Students were given a scenario and were given 5 minutes to formulate a response and present it infront of others. Such questions were pooled from actual ethic questions during medical shcool interviews.

UTMC Visit

Recently we visited the University of Toledo medical center. First, the members of AED were welcomed by Dr.Pearson, the Assistant Dean of medical school admissions. Dr. Pearson gave us extensive advice as to the specifics of what they look for in an applicant, as well as an in-depth look at the application and interview process which he spoke about MMI’s. Next, the members of AED were led by two medical students to the Cadaver lab, where they discussed what it was like to work with a cadaver. An open cadaver was presented, and the members were able to experience first-hand what it would look like to work with a cadaver.

First Aid Crash Course

Jody Morris, a health care professional and lecturer for the health and human services department, took the Ohio Beta members to a manikin lab for a crash course on first aid. Using manikins representing adults, children, and infants, the members were walked through how to react to possible scenarios such as choking and heart attack, as well as AED use and the proper form for chest compressions on the individual manikins. She touched mainly on first responder safety, as well as the steps to take when approaching a scene.
